FBR Barton Crockett reiterated an Outperform rating and $39 price target: inemark’s 2Q14 earnings report was encouraging in a difficult period. • [By Rick Aristotle Munarriz]

Frederic J. Brown, AFP/Getty Images Moviegoers aren't heading out the multiplex the way they used to, but that doesn't mean that Hollywood is toast. AMC Entertainment (AMC) reported quarterly results Tuesday. The nation's leading exhibitor -- 345 theaters with 4,976 screens -- went public two months ago. The headline numbers are positive. Revenue increased a better than expected 2.3 percent to $713 million. Profitability also expanded nicely. However, revenue increased as a result of a 5.5 percent increase in ticket prices and a 3.7 percent uptick in concessions purchased by patrons. Obviously you don't see those kind of gains against a mere 2.3 percent lift in revenue without dealing with more empty seats, and that's just what happened. There was a 3.2 percent decline in attendance. AMC's ticket takers welcomed 50.4 million guests during the holiday quarter, well below the 52.1 million guests that it entertained a year earlier. That's bad, and what makes things worse is that it had fewer theaters -- from continuing operations -- a year earlier. It wouldn't be wise to hold out for a Hollywood ending. Customers Want Bigger and Better Things Apologists will argue that it wasn't a bumper crop of movies hitting theaters, but that's not accurate at all. Last year's biggest box office winner -- "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" -- opened in November. Disney's "Frozen" also opened ahead of the holidays, and it's the family entertainment giant's biggest non-Pixar earner since 1994's "The Lion King." Moviegoers still come out for the big movies, and they're also willing to pay more for a premium setting. IMAX (IMAX) reported blowout quarterly results a few days earlier. IMAX screens rang up a record $244 million in ticket sales worldwide. IMAX is also closing out the year with a record backlog of 384 commercial theaters to deploy. RealD (RLD) is also holding up nicely as a leading provider of 3-D systems for exhibitors. It enjoyed a major boost with "Gravity," a

Getty Images From a popular multiplex operator going public to a retailer getting hacked at the worst possible time, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst news from the business world. Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -- Winner Chipotle is getting a new stamp in its ethnic cuisine passport. Having mastered Mexican, it was already giving Asian a shot with its new ShopHouse chain. And now, we can add Italian to its map after Chipotle revealed this week that it's a financial backer of Pizzeria Locale. The fast casual concept gives pizza a Chipotle-like makeover with folks ordering at the counter, customizing their 11-inch pies along the assembly line, after which they are baked in a speedy oven that serves up tasty pies in just two minutes. Chipotle's growing just fine with its flagship burrito chain, but it never hurts to diversify before expansion-fueled growth plateaus, or tastes change. Target (TGT) -- Loser Holiday shopping at Target may ultimately prove to more trouble than bargain seekers were hoping for this season. The cheap chic discounter revealed that hackers installed software that stole the info on more than 40 million credit and debit card transactions from Nov. 27 through Dec. 15. This is naturally going to be bad news for those that had their plastic compromised. Everyone that shopped at Target this season is being advised to carefully look over their statements. However, it's also very bad for the retailer at the worst possible time. Shoppers may not be too comfortable heading into Target during these last few shopping days before Christmas. AMC Entertainment (AMC) -- Winner Lights! Camera! IPO action! It may not have been the blockbuster IPO of the year, but the debut of the leading movie theater chain proved to be a success this week. AMC Entertainment went public at $18, opening 7 percent higher and staying above its IPO price. The leading exhibitor operates 343 movie theaters housing 4,950 screens. Best Bank Stocks To Invest In Right Now

After seeing a rough patch for quite some time, the financial sector, especially the broker-dealer/capital markets segment of the industry, breathed a sigh of relief last year. Being one of the best performing segments in 2012, the sentiment for the sector as a whole remains bullish in 2013 as well (Read: Best ETFs to Start 2013).

The recent rally in the equity market was mostly attributable to the performance of the financial stocks. The sector also has relatively modest valuations that are attracting investments.

Banks have bounced back following a series of hedging losses and scandals, surging almost 200% over the last four years. This strong performance was attributable to sound balance sheets, an uptick in mortgage activity, and lower loss provisions. Admittedly, a lot remains to be done in order to reach the levels seen before the global financial crisis, though many appear on their way to these marks.

Now, with an improving employment level, housing recovery, increase in consumer confidence and the Fed President recent dovish comments regarding easing, there is a general mood of optimism among investors.

The opportunity exists because the once-thriving secondary/tertiary life settlement market has been all but abandoned by institutional investors, scared off by litigious insurers like Phoenix and a lack of manufactured policies. My research indicates that this undue pessimism towards life settlement contracts (LSC) has begun to reverse itself, or has at least stabilized. Investors who are far smarter than me are snapping up contracts and policies, seeking to capitalize on the uncorrelated, and excessive, IRRs. These investors seem to agree with our thesis that life settlements should outperform most other asset classes over a long enough time period.

Mattel (MAT), the world's largest toymaker, agreed to buy Mega Brands (MB) for $460 million, acquiring the biggest challenger to Lego A/S in the construction-toy market. Mattel is offering C$17.75 ($16) a share, according to a statement today, a 36 percent premium over yesterday's closing price. The board of Montreal-based Mega Brands unanimously approved the transaction, and investors holding 39 percent of the stock, including Chief Executive Officer Marc Bertrand and Fairfax Financial Holdings (FFH), agreed to the deal. The purchase of Mega Brands, the world's second-largest maker of snap-together blocks, will fill a product hole for Mattel. It doesn't have its own construction line, locking it out of a $4 billion market in the U.S. and Europe. The category also is a bright spot in a toy industry that has seen growth stall in the U.S. Mattel considered starting its own construction line, then opted instead to buy Mega Brands because it would be faster and less risky, Mattel CEO Bryan G. Stockton said on a call with reporters. Mattel got its first taste of construction in 2012 when it debuted blocks for its Barbie brand through a licensing deal with Mega Brands. Mattel realized that replicating this kind of expertise would take years, Stockton said. 'About Growth' "This acquisition is all about growth," Stockton said. "We see an opportunity to expand our brands in this category across boys, girls and preschool." Mattel shares rose 0.8 percent to $37.44 at 10:34 a.m. in New York. They had declined 9 percent over the past year through yesterday. Shares of Montreal-based Mega Brands surged 36 percent to C$17.73 today in Toronto. Mattel is coming off a lackluster holiday season, with sales sinking 6.3 percent -- the biggest quarterly drop since 2009. The El Segundo, California-based toymaker has looked to acquisitions to boost sales in the past. In February of 2012, it paid $680 million to buy HIT Entertainment, owner of Thomas the Tank Engine. Last year, Blackberry investors were not quite pleased with the collapse of a $4.7 billion buyout by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. (FFH) because the management had clearly highlighted the vulnerable cash position of the company and an uncontrollable rate of cash burn that reduced the time available to the company to bounce back. However, in retrospect, the decision made by FairFax to abandon the deal and instead fund the company with $1 billion in convertible bonds along with the appointment of a new management team proved to be beneficial for the struggling giant. In a bid to create superior products and innovate on the existing products, the current management has sparked reasonable hope among investors of a possible comeback.

Advisors' Opinion:

Indeed, previous programs designed to help homeowners avoid foreclosure raised similar concerns about moral hazard. Back in 2009, the earliest attempts to provide for mortgage loan modifications resulted in far fewer benefits than expected, because the banks involved chose not to grant modification in many cases. Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) were among the slowest of the big banks to modify loans early in the program's existence, moving forward with just 4% to 6% of eligible mortgages within the first half-year or so of the program. Even giving lenders incentives to modify loans didn't keep bankers from concluding that they'd often be better off not modifying and counting on homeowners to find ways to cure their delinquent loans without a modification. In other words, banks chose not to reward their customers automatically for being late and seeking assistance.

Best Growth Stocks To Own For 2014

Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) most recent earnings were greeted warmly by investors, but the quarter was a mixed bag of positive and negative storylines. One of the areas investors are focusing the most on is Apple's iPad sales number, which was its first ever year-over-year drop in the number of tablets sold.

In the video below, Fool analysts Evan Niu and Eric Bleeker examine whether the iPad can keep up with a tablet market that's still seeing quite a bit of global growth. As the two of them discuss, with the hottest area of tablet sales being on the extreme low end, Apple's iPad growth rates will likely trail the global average. However, what might be the most interesting storyline for the coming years iswhenconsumers buy new tablets. Since tablets are "newer" devices, the rate at which consumers upgrade tablets is still to be determined. Whether users choose to upgrade tablets in two, three, or four years will likely determine how big the iPad's total market size will be.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) would close higher on the week. The company behind the da Vinci surgical robotics system took a hit a week earlier after revealing that sales were soft in its latest quarter. I figured the bad news was already out of the way heading into Thursday's report. Unfortunately, the report was an even bigger disappointment. The stock fell 8% on the week. I was wrong. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, this was a close race until tech stocks fell on Friday. The Nasdaq moved 0.3% lower, and the Dow managed to close 0.5% higher. I was wrong. My final call was for CSX (NYSE: CSX  ) to beat Wall Street's income estimates in its latest quarter. The railroad giant has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.47 a share during the quarter, and it came through with net income of $0.52. I was right.

One out of three? I can do better than that.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG) posted a 14% drop in its Q3 net income. Its revenue fell 7% year-over-year. Intuitive Surgical shares tumbled 7.77% to $368.13 in the after-hours trading session.

  • [By GURUFOCUS]

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG), which sells the da Vinci robotic surgical systems, fell 25.7% in the quarter when results fell short of expectations as growth in procedures slowed and unit placements declined. Hospital admissions have been weak and negative publicity affected the amount of procedures performed. We reduced our position in the stock by half this year, but now believe the stock is oversold and too cheap.

  • [By Steve Symington]

In addition, unlike incredibly expensive medical robots from the likes ofMAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO  ) andIntuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) -- the costs for which can easily run into the seven-figure range -- iRobot's RP-VITA was to be available through a leasing model for a very reasonable $4,000 to $6,000 per month.

The importance of this purchase cannot easily be overstate for Pernix -- the company had $85 million in revenue last year, while Treximet on its own brought in $79 million -- and Pernix clearly sees some additional upside potential for the drug, whether it's through a potential indication expansion (to pediatric patients) or through synergies with Pernix's current salesforce.

Top 10 Prefered Stocks To Own Right Now

Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images NEW YORK -- Sears Holdings' sales are slipping faster and faster. The retailer Thursday reported declines in comparable-store sales at its Kmart and U.S. namesake chain for the crucial holiday season that were even sharper than for the third quarter. At its U.S. Sears stores, sales at stores open at least one year, an industry benchmark known as comparable sales, were down 9.2 percent in the nine weeks that ended Jan. 6 and down 5.7 percent at the discount Kmart chain. Sears (SHLD) shares were down 13.4 percent at $36.85 in after-hours trading. Sales at the company have been falling since 2005, when billionaire hedge fund manager Edward Lampert merged the two U.S. chains in an $11 billion deal. The retailer has closed about 300 U.S. stores since 2010, tightly managing inventory, selling real estate and shedding assets at home and in Canada as it tries to engineer a turnaround. The company has about 2,000 Sears and Kmart locations in the United States. "The results that we posted are not nearly what we want them to be," Lampert, Sears Holdings' chief executive officer and top shareholder, wrote in a blog post. The company has made a big bet that its strategy to make targeted offers through digital and social means to members of its "Shop Your Way" rewards program, which generated about 69 percent of holiday sales, can fix the company. In his blog, Lampert lamented that the holiday results "overshadow" the progress Sears had made with the program. Lampert told Reuters in November he saw room for further store closings in 2014. "They're not focused on executing at retail so that's why we've seen the business deteriorate," said Mary Ross Gilbert, a managing director at investment bank Imperial Capital. Imperial has an underperform rating on Sears shares and a sell rating on its 6.625 percent bonds. Gilbert said that despite the holiday results, the company had enough liquidity in the near term. Retailers faced the most promotional holiday season since the recession, trying to outdo one another with deep discounts to lure shoppers, adding further pressure to Sears and Kmart. As a result, a number of retailers cut their profit forecasts on Thursday. Sears said it expects to post a lost of between $11.85 and $12.88 a share for the fiscal year ending Feb. 1. That includes a loss of $2.35 to $3.39 a share for the holiday quarter.

Top 10 Supermarket Stocks To Watch For 2014

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD  ) would close higher on the week. I thought the turnaround story at the drugstore chain has been validated with every passing quarter, and even though the stock was already at a five-year high, I believed that Thursday's quarterly report would be enough to push the retailer higher. Rite Aid did come through with better-than -xpected results, but it's hard to impress the market when the Dow is getting slammed. After closing higher on Monday, Rite Aid shares proceeded to head lower every single day after that. I was wrong. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market closed sharply lower this week. The Nasdaq moved 1.9% lower, but the Dow managed to close just 1.8% lower. I was wrong. My final call was for Kroger (NYSE: KR  ) to beat Wall Street's income estimates in its latest quarter. The supermarket operator has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.88 a share during the quarter, and it came through with net income of $0.92 a share. I was right.

One out of three? Bummer! I can do better than that.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Getty ImagesAruba is one of Southwest's new destinations. At the beginning of July, Southwest Airlines (LUV) did something it hadn't previously done in its 43 years of existence: It landed a Southwest-branded commercial flight in a foreign country. Its move abroad is a departure for the carrier, which over the decades built a reputation as a charmingly low-frills airline flying only domestic routes. In a tough industry, it's done well with this business profile, so why is it starting to go overseas now? International Income Domestic air travel is growing relatively slowly. In 2013, total passenger numbers for intra-U.S. voyages rose by less than 1 percent on a year-over-year basis, and just over 4 percent from 2009 to 2013. Those growth numbers for international travel, meanwhile, were 3 percent and 17 percent, respectively. American Airlines Group (AAL) brought in around 40 percent of its total $23 billion or so in passenger revenues from international flights in fiscal 2013. United Continental (UAL) doesn't break down its take by domestic versus international hauling. It does, however, admit that for June its revenue passenger miles (a key figure of total paying customer volume) for domestic flights totaled 8.36 billion, while that for international came in at 8.40 billion -- an almost exact 50/50 split. Cheaper Caribbean Southwest plans to use its famous discounts to win business for its new routes -- the nearby vacation destinations of Jamaica, the Bahamas and Aruba. For example, booking one of Southwest's round-trip, nonstop flights from Atlanta to Montego Bay, Jamaica, for midweek departure and return in September at the lowest available fare recently brought up a ticket for just under $300. The cheapest option for a nonstop round trip for the same dates on Priceline Group's (PCLN) Kayak booking engine was a bit over $400 from Delta (DAL). That was similar to the price returned from a search on the airline's own site. Meanwhile, Priceline's propr

While we suspect some investors may be cautious following the strong performance of airline stocks over the past 124 months, we believe there is significant runway remaining. It is important to note that despite the major consolidations that have been announced over the past five years, only one merger Delta-Northwest has been fully implemented, while remaining combinations Southwest (LUV)-AirTran, United-Continental, and U.S. Airways-American Airlines (AAL) are in various stages of achieving synergies. We expect the primary benefits of consolidation to be: (1) a more favorable pricing environment, (2) reduced risk of irrational pricing, and (3) an improved ability to use ancillary revenues to affect passenger fares and further mitigate fuel cost risk.

ARCP has a shorter trading history than some of its peers, such as Realty Income (O) and National Retail Properties (NNN), which largely explains why its yield is higher. As a relatively new REIT, ARCP stock is largely unfollowed by investors. But once its merger with Cole Properties (COLE) is completed, ARCP will be the largest trip-net REIT by market cap and total square footage, and it will no longer be flying under Wall Street radar.

Yesterday after the market closed, small cap audio stock Skullcandy Inc (NASDAQ: SKUL) reported earnings and began rising in after hours trading, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with the performance of other audio stocks like mid cap Harman International Industries Inc (NYSE: HAR) and small caps Koss Corporation (NASDAQ: KOSS) and Parametric Sound Corp (NASDAQ: PAMT). I should mention that inlate 2012, Skullcandy had the dubious distinction of being the market most shorted stock (see: Long Live the Shorts or the Short Squeeze? SKUL, AM & UBNT) with shortinterest of 86.47% and there would still be a lot of shorts out there who might start feeling the squeeze (Note: SKUL is at least no longer on the HighShortInterest.com list)

Koss Corporation (KOSS) was no different because after looking over its balance sheet and profitability numbers I found substantial NOLs, little debt and reasonable profitability levels which usually are good signs that the company may be a good investment if the company is undervalued. This however is not an article about a company that I will ever invest in due to it being a grossly overvalued, dying company, which has major management concerns.
