Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), a natural resource company engaged in the acquisition of mineral assets, and oil and natural gas resources has seen the worst of times with a slowdown in China and operational problems in Indonesia. This article discusses the reversal of some of the issues and why Freeport-McMoRan is a good stock to own.
Resumption of Exports From Indonesia
On July 25, 2014, Freeport-McMoRan announced that its Indonesian subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia received approval from the Government of Indonesia to resume exports of copper concentrates. PT-FI will resume full operations immediately and concentrate exports are expected to commence in August 2014. This is an immediate positive and will impact the company results from the next quarter.
Certain issues are still pending for resolution with the government of Indonesia. The government wants to increase its ownership in the Grasberg mine to 30% from 10% and the parties are in negotiation for a fair value for the deal.

The market was a little wary, though, when some days prior to Oshkosh's announcement, leading construction equipment maker Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) slashed its full-year revenue guidance significantly to $57 billion-$61 billion, from its earlier projection of $60 billion-$68 billion. But what investors should know is that Caterpillar is largely dependent on the beleaguered mining industry for revenue, unlike Terex. That's also the major reason why Caterpillar downgraded its guidance.

But even with the Dow under pressure, a few stocks managed to post some sizable gains. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) led the Dow's gainers, rising 1.2% as the company announced that it would execute another $1 billion under an accelerated stock repurchase transaction, working with France's Societe Generale to facilitate the purchase. The transaction marks the second time Caterpillar has used the tactic, with a previously announced $1 billion repurchase in April having been completed last month. The moves show how healthy Caterpillar's cash flow is, but it's unclear how well they fit with the company's less optimistic assessment of its long-term earnings outlook.

Komatsu has seen its sales fall in China, where the company leads the manufacturing industry. However, despite China's recent slowdown, Komatsu leadership still sees demand picking up between 5% and 10% in the world's second-largest economy as the Chinese government contemplates its own stimulus plans. The weak yen will mean that Komatsu's sales matter all the more, particularly as top competitor Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , which has been hammered by the mining industry's decline, ramps up its own China operations. Caterpillar lags Komatsu in China, but it increased its Chinese sales year over year in the first quarter.

Halliburton's share-price gains began early in the quarter after the company reported its first-quarter results. Although the company took a massive $637 million charge related to the 2010 Gulf disaster, Halliburton managed to hold its own on the domestic front in a weak environment. Internationally, the company cleaned up, with sales rising 21% and at more than twice that rate in the Eastern Hemisphere. But, perhaps most importantly, Halliburton looked favorably on the near-future for domestic drilling, noting gains in margins, and some pricing power expected to enhance profitability from rising well production. That's consistent with the results we saw from Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) this morning, as the industry leader beat earnings expectations with a nearly 50% jump in its net profits, coming largely from overseas activity, but also posting a 2% revenue increase in North America.

Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.
